It should have fertile well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to slightly alkaline on the pH scale (6.5 to 7.5 or so). The fertility can be achieved by using compost, amend or some other form of organic materials. If your soil doesnt drain well, the addition of course sand can help. For the most part, you want to avoid the use of fertilizers because they promote a profusion of soft leafy growth that offers poor flavor and aroma, and little resistance to pests, diseases and cold.

The University of Michigan Health System offers these suggestions for using herbs and spices http://www.healtone.com/products/Frostbite.html in your diet: Store herbs and spices in a cool, dry spot; store green herbs out of direct exposure to sunlight. Add fresh herbs into salads, soups and sauces for added flavor. When adding whole spices such as cloves, bay leaves or cumin, add at the start of cooking time. To boost flavor, crumble dried herbs just before using them.
